Bio-Feedback Based Emotional Regulation Program
The clinic offers a gamified biofeedback program developed and researched by clinicians at Boston Children’s Hospital in collaboration with Harvard Medical School. The program uses real-time heart-rate feedback within engaging tablet-based games to help children learn practical, evidence-based emotional-regulation skills from Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT).
Children wear a comfortable heart-rate band while playing specially designed games. As their body becomes more “revved up,” the game responds by becoming harder, gently prompting the child to practise calming strategies such as slow breathing, pausing, and refocusing. This immediate feedback helps children notice early body signs of emotional escalation and practise regulating their emotions in the moment.
The program is offered as a 3-session treatment program. Families can choose:
-
a combined approach, using the game alongside development of an individualised emotion-regulation plan, or
-
a game-only format, designed for children who find talk-based therapy difficult or are reluctant to engage verbally.
Biofeedback assisted therapy sessions are provided by a Clinical Psychologist and can be accessed under a Mental Health Care Plan (MHCP). Sessions are $235 per appointment, with the current Medicare rebate for a Clinical Psychologist ($145) applied provide.
